Before Power Plant Mall

Before Ayala Center

Before SM Megamall

Before Greenhills

There was...

MARIKINA SHOE EXPO, CUBAO

When I was a kid I would visit this place with my family weeks before school started to look for a new pair of school shoes. The stores sold locally manufactured shoes from the city of Marikina - shoe capital of the Philippines. The industry somewhat died with the influx of cheaper shoes from China and the construction of so many malls in Metro Manila.

Now only a few shops remain open for business. The rest were converted into restos, bars, art galleries and vintage stores. The compound is now more known as Cubao X.

I went to visit with Ryan and Sam as we looked to unwind after a very stressful day at work.

Old-school Marikina Shoe Expo

Our destination... Mogwai

Good beer

Craaap!

I'd hang out here again as long as it's not 100 degrees during the night. The light rain during our visit made the place surprisingly cozy.
